If you have solar panels and a home battery, did you know you could earn extra money by allowing your battery to help support the electricity grid?
I've signed up with Axle Energy, a service that pays you for sharing electricity stored in your home battery when the grid needs extra power. It's a great way to get more value from a battery you already own.
If you fancy giving Axle Energy a try, you can use my referral link below.
We can both receive £25 when you sign up and connect your first battery, subject to the referral terms.
It's worth checking that your inverter is compatible and that you have a working smart meter before signing up.
The idea is pretty simple. Sometimes the National Grid needs extra electricity to help balance supply and demand. During these periods, Axle Energy can use energy stored in your home battery to help support the grid.
In return, you get paid £1 for every kWh your battery exports during a grid event.
Axle also advertises a guaranteed minimum payment of £10 per month, subject to its programme terms.
My 5KW system offers a great return with AXLE!
There are several reasons why I think Axle Energy is worth looking into:
Earn extra money: Get paid £1 per kWh exported during qualifying grid events.
Make more of your battery: Your existing battery can generate additional income rather than simply storing electricity for your home.
Keep your energy supplier: Axle says its service works alongside your existing energy supplier and electricity tariff.
Minimal effort: Once everything is connected, the process is largely automated.
Help support the grid: Your battery can help provide extra electricity when the grid needs it.
You still manage your battery schedule as normal outside grid events, although Axle will control its discharge during those events.
If you've already invested in solar panels and battery storage, I think it's well worth investigating another way to earn from your system.
You're already paying for the equipment, so being able to generate extra income from your battery could help improve the overall value of your investment.
Just remember that exporting stored electricity means having less energy available for your own use afterwards, so it's worth considering how this fits with your normal battery schedule and electricity tariff.
For me, anything that helps make a home battery pay for itself a little quicker is worth a look!
Before signing up, it's worth checking with your current Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) provider to make sure you're allowed to participate in Axle Energy's battery-sharing scheme alongside your existing export tariff. Depending on your current agreement, there may be restrictions on how and where you can export electricity. It's always best to check first so you don't risk affecting your existing SEG payments.
