The British racing community is reeling today after a devastating first-lap crash during the Supersport race at Oulton Park claimed the lives of two riders — Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson.
The incident happened at turn one during race two of the Supersport class. Eleven riders were caught up in the accident. As a result, organisers made the immediate and correct decision to cancel the remainder of the weekend's racing, including the third British Superbike race.
Owen Jenner, just 21 years old, sustained what’s been described as a catastrophic head injury. Despite the best efforts of medics both trackside and at the circuit medical centre, he sadly passed away.
29-year-old Shane Richardson was also seriously injured in the crash. He was being transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital with severe chest trauma but tragically died before arrival.
Tom Tunstall, 47, was also taken to hospital with serious back and abdominal injuries. Five other riders suffered minor injuries, and three more walked away unhurt.
The full list of those involved:
Minor injuries (no hospital transfer): Carl Harris (#9), Max Morgan (#39), Cameron Hall (#48), Freddie Barnes (#78), Morgan McLaren-Wood (#95)
Uninjured: Lewis Jones (#25), Corey Tinker (#37), George Edwards (#90)
An investigation is now underway, led jointly by MSVR, the MCRCB, Cheshire Constabulary, and the Coroner’s office.
This is one of the darkest days in recent BSB history. My thoughts are with the families, teams, and friends of everyone involved — especially Owen and Shane, who will be deeply missed by all of us in the racing world.
